"Should I be afraid?" Jan blurts out. She is not aware of having even framed the thought before the words speak themselves. But once they're out of her mouth, they seem to hang in front of her, as big as a billboard. Even in her e-mails to Morton she has never expressed this question quite so bluntly before.

Eleanor Lerman lives and writes in New York. She has published four books of poetry. A fifth collection, The Sensual World Re-Emerges, is forthcoming from Sarabande in 2010. Her short-story collection, The Blonde on the Train, was published by Mayapple Press in 2009. She has won numerous awards for her poetry, among them the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize from the Academy of American Poets and the Nation magazine for the year's most outstanding book of poetry for Our Post-Soviet History Unfolds (Sarabande Books, 2005). Most recently, she received a grant from the Puffin Foundation to support a novel based on the life of Carlos Castaneda. [2009]
